“Her left arm and hand is pink and warm and the nails are growing. There is a little movement in hand”. This was Malaysian Health Minister Chua JuiMeng speaking to reporters about a month after the world’s first arm and hand transplant to a baby was carried out at Selayang hospital, Kuala Lumpur on May 18, 2000. The transplant was carried out on Chong Lih Ying, whose donor was her identical twin sister who had died when the pair was born. Chong received the left arm and hand of her sister. The transplanted arm was expected to function fully by the end of the year.
